The Gosforth Park estate covers approximately 2,000 acres and was owned from about 1509 by wealthy merchants, coal mine and land owner, the Brandling family. Gosforth House was built between 1755 and 1764 for Charles Brandling (1733-1802) to a design by renowned architect James Paine. To adorn his new mansion, Brandling laid out Gosforth Park and a 50-acre lake. In 1880, the house was sold with 807 acres to High Gosforth Park Ltd, the company which was formed to establish a racecourse on the estate.
